Camping is trendy right now. But if you want to spend the night outside in a tent, you should pay attention to a few points.

It’s cheap, close to nature and perfect for those looking for peace and quiet: camping is currently back in fashion. Since hotel rooms and holiday apartments are already sold out this summer in many popular holiday regions such as the Baltic and North Sea as well as the foothills of the Alps, camping is sometimes the last possible overnight stay. A few points should be observed so that the holiday in a tent is an unforgettable experience.

Important legal basics when camping

Under the terms tents or camping is used according to the German Alpine Association understood a planned overnight stay in the open air that takes place outside of official places. However, camping is not allowed in Germany without the permission of the landowner. Wild camping is an administrative offense and is punished with a fine. Be in Bavaria according to the catalog of fines 10 to 200 euros are due if you have illegally set up a tent or caravan. If you pitch your tent in a nature reserve without permission, it becomes even more expensive – then up to 500 euros can threaten. In other countries the situation is different: For example, in Sweden or Norway you can pitch your tent anywhere – except of course on private property.

In this country, an interim solution was found to enable campers to spend the night in nature. So-called trekking sites are chargeable, the capacity is usually very limited and they can only be reached on foot. In addition, such places are only intended for one night. In Schleswig-Holstein there are a total of almost 20 pieces, on the official website interested parties can view the locations. There are also such trekking sites in the Black Forest, Franconian Forest and the Eifel. If you want more comfort, you can of course pitch your tent on a campsite.

The most important utensils

When camping, the most important thing is the right tent. There should be enough space to stow belongings in it. In addition, it should be waterproof and easy to transport if you carry it around in your backpack. The same applies to sleeping bags and sleeping mats. For the latter, a self-inflating model is recommended, which takes up less space. In summer, a thinner sleeping bag is usually sufficient, but temperatures can drop sharply, especially in the mountains. That’s why you should get good advice and, if in doubt, choose a thicker one.

A sharp knife, cutlery, plates and cups, a camping stove, a headlamp, a kitchen towel and a small sponge to wash the dishes are advisable. A camping table and matching chairs are a must for those who do not like to sit on the floor. A clothesline can be handy for drying towels and bathing suits. When choosing clothes, you should make sure that they are as practical as possible. Here, less is often more – just take a tube of hand wash with you to remove smaller stains. A sweater, in case it gets cold at night, and a rain jacket should definitely be on the packing list. A backpack is not only advisable for hikers, but also for day trippers to conveniently stow water, sunscreen, etc.

Respect for nature

If you stay overnight on one of the trekking sites, you should not make any noise during the twilight period. Because this could disturb wild animals. In addition, do not leave any waste behind and generally leave the site as you found it. If you still have some space in your backpack, you can also take other people’s rubbish with you and dispose of it at the next opportunity – nature will thank you for it.
