Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield lied to everyone, even Emma Stone

Kept in secrecy about his return to ‘No Way Home’, Andrew Garfield was forced to lie to everyone for many months. Including Emma Stone, his ex-girlfriend and co-star in “Amazing Spider-Man”.

WARNING – The article below contains minor spoilers for one of the scenes from “Spider-Man No Way Home”. Please move on if, even knowing the actors who are returning to the film, you don’t want to know anything more.

Since mid-December 2021, the suspense has ended: Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina are not the only actors to have resumed their respective roles of Green Goblin, Electro and Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man No Way Home. Because the previous interpreters of Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, come to lend a hand to Tom Holland.

Not surprisingly for many Internet users, as the rumor kept coming back despite the efforts of the main parties concerned, bound by a confidentiality clause. Unlike Tobey Maguire, whose media appearances are rarer, Andrew Garfield has found himself in the spotlight more than once in 2021. And not a show, not an interview, not a red carpet passed without that the film he came to defend from being overshadowed by a question about his presence in the new Spider-Man.

A WEB OF LIES

After holding his tongue for many months, the actor rewarded at the Golden Globes for Tick, Tick… Boom! can finally let go. And admit that he did indeed lie to everyone. Including Emma Stone, his ex-companion and partner in the saga The Amazing Spider-Man, where she lent her features to Gwen Stacy.

“Emma kept texting me”, explains Andrew Garfield in the podcast Happy Sad Confused. “She was like, ‘Are you into this new Spider-Man?’, and I was like, I didn’t know what she was talking about. I didn’t know. It went on like this. Then she saw the movie. And she was like, ‘You’re a moron’.”

Emma Stone’s final appearance in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Words that confirm that the rumor that Emma Stone had been approached to appear in the film was false. At the time, the actress’ pregnancy had been mentioned as a possible obstacle to her cameo in the role of Gwen Stacy, when the latter had died at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It would therefore not have been possible for her to be present, scriptwise speaking, because Jon Watts’ feature film takes place a few years later.

Gwen Stacy is, on the other hand, evoked during a moving scene during which Peter evokes his loss and the mixture of darkness and violence in which his death then plunged him. A scene that Emma Stone was able to discover, like everyone else, when No Way Home was released. Not without cursing Andrew Garfield internally during the last third of the film.
