Scammers pretend to be your bank advisor by usurping your bank’s telephone identity.
Beware of this new telephone scam that is rampant in France, based on the principle of spoofing. It can lead to losses of several thousand euros for the victims of the scam, with a well-established operating protocol. Locating the eel under the rock is not necessarily an easy task.
A well-crafted scam
In this new scam, the scammer calls his victim posing as his bank advisor. In order to reinforce the credibility of the trap, the caller’s displayed number is generally modified in order to usurp the identity of the bank in question. Well informed by research beforehand, the scammer already knows the name and surname as well as the address of the victim.
In a professional and reassuring tone, the pseudo-bank adviser makes believe by telephone that a fraud has been detected on the victim’s account. Following this element, he informs his interlocutor that he will send him cancellation codes targeting suspicious transactions in order to put an end to this fraud. If the victim does receive codes, these are not codes to cancel a transaction, but to verify online purchases by credit card, on sites outside France.
This scam, with damages that can range from a hundred to several thousand euros, reminds us of banking rule number 1: never send confidential codes to anyone, not even your banker.
