Form auricles. Sports with over-ear headphones can be annoying, especially in summer. They’re also lighter, sit more firmly in place, and don’t wobble back and forth when you’re running, for example, like some larger headphones do.

But there is also another variant of Bluetooth headphones, as our comparison shows. These are neither in-ear, on-ear, nor over-ear headphones, but rather those with bone conduction technology. Apple AirPods Pro 2

The classics among Bluetooth headphones for sports were, are and remain the AirPods from Apple. The latest model in particular – the AirPods Pro 2 – can now be seen by more and more visitors to fitness studios or running parks. The in-ear headphones are popular for sports due to their ease of use, lightweight construction and great sound.

The headphones also come with first-class noise cancellation and an adaptive ambient noise mode, which blocks out particularly loud ambient noises to protect your hearing. The headphones are also equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 and Multipoint, although the latter only works with Apple devices. They are sweat-resistant according to IPX4, have a 30-hour battery life (with case) and cost around 250 euros.

The Huawei FreeClip are open-ear headphones. So they don’t close the ear canal, but send the sound to the eardrum via a small loudspeaker. This means that functions such as ANC and a noticeable bass are eliminated, but there is no isolation from the outside world. This ensures more safety, especially when jogging in traffic.

The battery life is very good, and the headphones are protected against dust and water. The biggest plus, however, is comfort. The FreeClip are virtually unnoticeable and can be worn for a long period of time. Since they sit on the side of the ear, the temples of the glasses are not touched.

If it is important for you to continue to be able to hear external noises during sports or leisure activities, then in our opinion the FreeClip are currently the choice if you want open-ear earphones. However, with an RRP of 199 euros, the FreeClip are not a bargain.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro

The Galaxy Buds2 Pro from the Korean manufacturer Samsung are only partially advertised as headphones that are suitable for sports, but they do that objectively. They are small, light and therefore perfect for working out, running or cycling. A unique selling point is the high-quality 24-bit sound, which is achieved with a specially developed transmission protocol and the two-way speaker.

The headphones also offer high-quality noise cancellation and an automatic conversation mode, thanks to which you can easily communicate with people around you. The comparatively short battery life of just five hours without the case and 18 hours with the case is somewhat sobering. The headphones are waterproof to IPX7, so you could theoretically even swim with them. They currently only cost around 170 euros from Samsung and are available in three colors.

Shokz OpenRun Pro

The Shokz OpenRun Pro are the special Bluetooth headphones mentioned at the beginning. Here the sound is not transmitted via small speakers that fire sound into your ear canal, but rather using bone conduction technology. There are two “vibrating” sound generators in front of and behind your ear. The sound is transmitted to the auditory organ via your skull bones.

The big advantage: your ears remain completely free so you can hear your surroundings without any restrictions. This makes the headphones particularly suitable for cycling, where you need to be able to record noises from your surroundings. Bystanders don’t hear your music. The battery life of these headphones is around 10 hours and they are dust and water protected according to IP55. The Pro version costs around 200 euros, but there are also cheaper versions from the same manufacturer.

Teufel Airy Sports TWS

The Teufel Airy Sports TWS are completely wireless headphones from the German audio manufacturer Teufel, which stand out in this comparison despite their TWS design. They are particularly suitable for sports because they come with a special ear hook. This makes them larger than the other models we have presented, but this means they are more or less secure – regardless of what sport you do.

Unfortunately, the comparatively not so cheap headphones come without active noise cancellation, but Teufel claims that existing noises are passively suppressed very well. The headphones are splash-proof according to IPX3, have a long battery life of around 31 hours and cost around 120 euros from Teufel.

The Sony LinkBuds S has one thing in particular that stands out: its format. At around 4.8 grams, they are very light and extremely small. With so little weight, these headphones won’t budge even during the most intense workout, and won’t be noticeable even after wearing them for several hours. They also offer Sony’s famous high-quality ANC and top-notch sound.

The headphones come with Bluetooth 5.2 with multipoint, have a total battery life of around 20 hours (with case) and are splash-proof according to IPX4, so even a run in the rain or a lot of sweat shouldn’t be a problem. They cost around 140 euros from Sony and are available in four colors – elsewhere you can sometimes get them for 20 euros cheaper.
