  • Around 80 more people were injured.
  • It is not the first death drama at the National Stadium.

Around 50,000 spectators traveled to the Malagasy national stadium in Antananarivo for the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games. There was a stampede at one entrance, triggering mass panic. At least twelve people died. 80 other people are injured, some in critical condition. This was announced by Prime Minister Christian Ntsay.

The Island Games is a competition that takes place every four years. The major event has been held for around 40 years and takes place on various islands in the south-west of the Indian Ocean.

Athletes from Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Reunion and the Maldives compete in various disciplines.

The cause of the accident is so far unclear. Andry Rajoelina, Madagascar’s President, said in a televised address that it was a tragic event and called for a minute’s silence. He himself was also present at the sporting event.

Not the first mishap

In 2019, at least 15 people died in a similar incident at the same stadium. At that time, a concert was held at the Mahamasina Stadium to mark Madagascar’s Independence Day. More than 100 people were also injured in the stampede four years ago.
