Jonathan Frakes became world-famous as an actor as Will Riker in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. But the star is not only successful in front of the camera, but also behind it. As a director, he shaped the “Star Trek” universe at least as much as he did as an actor!

To date, Jonathan Frakes has directed a total of 28 “Star Trek” episodes. The episodes are made up of almost every live-action series since The Next Century. Additionally, Frakes has also directed two feature films, “Star Trek: First Contact” and “Star Trek: Insurrection.”

A modern classic among the “Star Trek” episodes: “Old Star Travelers”. The “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” episode was released on Paramount+ in 2023. As the seventh episode of the second SNW season, “Animal Star Travelers” is the first series-wide crossover in a long time.

In this humorous and creative adventure, Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) from “Star Trek: Lower Decks” travel back in time and meet the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Pike (Anson Mount). We now have to work together to send the lower deckers from the future back there.

As the first crossover episode in almost two decades, “Animal Star Travelers” naturally had high expectations to meet. With Jonathan Frakes as director, the series not only gained a very experienced Trek veteran, Frakes’ sense of humor and Trek nostalgia are also put to good use.

The Standoff (Picard)

After the first two seasons of “Star Trek: Picard” received a mixed reception from fans, the third season is a true miracle. Not only do a lot of Trekkies tune in, the final season of the series also receives very good reviews. This is of course also due to the return of the crew from “The Next Century”.

For the first time, Jonathan Frakes has a lot to do in front of the camera as Riker, but his biggest moment of the season is probably as a director. The fourth episode “The Standoff” shows how the USS Titan-A is in a hopeless situation against Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and her spaceship shrike acts. Unable to maneuver and on the verge of destruction, solutions must be discussed and implemented quickly!

As a director, Frakes manages to use the dynamics of the characters, especially Picard (Patrick Stewart), Riker (Frakes), Seven (Jeri Ryan) and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) to build a lot of tension. An emotional fall creeps in among the old friends and friends, which turns the episode into an emotional roller coaster ride.
