Jonathan Frakes became world-famous as an actor as Will Riker in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. But the star is not only successful in front of the camera, but also behind it. As a director, he shaped the “Star Trek” universe at least as much as he did as an actor!

A modern classic among the “Star Trek” episodes: “Old Star Travelers”. The “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” episode was released on Paramount+ in 2023. As the seventh episode of the second SNW season, “Animal Star Travelers” is the first series-wide crossover in a long time.
In this humorous and creative adventure, Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) from “Star Trek: Lower Decks” travel back in time and meet the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Pike (Anson Mount). We now have to work together to send the lower deckers from the future back there.
As the first crossover episode in almost two decades, “Animal Star Travelers” naturally had high expectations to meet. With Jonathan Frakes as director, the series not only gained a very experienced Trek veteran, Frakes’ sense of humor and Trek nostalgia are also put to good use.

As a director, Frakes manages to use the dynamics of the characters, especially Picard (Patrick Stewart), Riker (Frakes), Seven (Jeri Ryan) and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) to build a lot of tension. An emotional fall creeps in among the old friends and friends, which turns the episode into an emotional roller coaster ride.
