At the end of Star Trek: Nemesis, Riker meets his successor as first officer of the Enterprise-E in a deleted scene. See how he leads this one onto the black ice!
- In the official Star Trek universe, Worf is Riker’s successor as first officer of the Enterprise-E.
- But it wasn’t always intended that way. In “Star Trek: Nemesis” a certain Martin Madden was actually supposed to take over the position.
- A scene was even filmed in which Madden meets Riker and is made fun of by him.
At the end of Star Trek: Nemesis, Picard’s first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) leaves the spaceship and becomes captain of a spaceship himself, the USS Titan. Since Picard (Patrick Stewart) will remain captain of the Enterprise for a few more years in the “Star Trek” chronology, a new number one is needed.
It may come as a surprise that in a deleted scene, this position is not yet occupied by any of his long-time companions, but that a man named Martin Madden (Steven Culp) becomes the new first officer. And in order to give him a warm welcome, Riker first humorously leads him onto the ice.
Just a Prank, Bro: Riker plays a prank on Martin Madden!
Martin Madden arrives on the Enterprise-E and first meets Captain Riker, who is preparing to set off on his own adventures. Since Madden wants to make a good impression on Picard, he asks Riker for advice before meeting Picard. Riker is of course immediately there with good advice – more or less!
Anyone who knows Picard knows that – unlike Captain Kirk! – is a captain who abides by Starfleet regulations and etiquette. However, Riker suggests to Madden that he should address Picard by his first name and that everything under Picard’s command will be handled casually.
An amused Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) watches the whole event and sees Madden making a fool of himself on the first day in front of Picard, who, with a steely expression, isn’t quite sure whether to smile or be annoyed.
Star Trek: The deleted scene is not canon!
canon is what belongs to the official series and is therefore established as a fact for all other series and films within the “Star Trek” universe. The deleted scene is not included. Retrospectively, it was confirmed that it wasn’t a certain Martin Madden who succeeded Riker as number one, it was Worf (Michael Dorn).
As revealed in Star Trek: Picard, after his time as Picard’s number one, Worf eventually took over the Enterprise-E as captain when Picard was promoted to admiral. Under Worf’s command, the USS Enterprise-E was destroyed, but he insists that it was not his fault.
Madden actor Steven Culp has been brought back from his deleted scene to play the role of Major J. Hayes, commander of the MACOs aboard the Enterprise, in the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise.
It remains unclear whether we will see more of the Enterprise-E crew. There is the idea of a “Star Trek: Picard” spin-off called “Star Trek: Legacy”, but this has not yet been officially confirmed by Paramount+. We list all new “Star Trek” releases for you!
