Star Wars: Beer instead of lightsaber! Chile simply cuts advertising into the films – and angers George Lucas

Why interrupt films for commercials when you can show the commercials IN THE film? At least that’s what they thought in Chile and added beer to “Star Wars.”

In 2003, the classic “Star Wars” trilogy was broadcast for the first time on Chilean television. A great day for science fiction fans and a great opportunity for the Compañía de Cervecerías Unidas, an association of brewing companies, to try out a new form of advertising.

To promote the beer Cerveza Cristal, tiny spots were filmed that visually fit into the respective scene from “Star Wars: A New Hope”. This made it look like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker or the Emperor were reaching for a beer. See for yourself:

This humorous idea was so popular and successful that the approach was repeated in later years in films such as “American Beauty”, “Notting Hill” and “Gladiator”.

However, George Lucas was not at all enthusiastic about this action and filed a complaint with the Chilean Council for Self-Regulation and Advertising Ethics. As a result, this beer version of “Star Wars” was never allowed to be broadcast again – but at least the best clips remain with us forever!
