When we were thinking about the film project Star Wars: Rogue Squadron dead and buried, here he is reborn from his ashes. The feature film directed by Patty Jenkins is in fact once again in development at Lucasfilm, the director confirmed.
Patty Jenkins back to work
The film Rogue Squadron had a destiny full of twists and turns. Announced in 2020, the feature film was to introduce “a new generation of pilots, as they prove their worth and risk their lives in a high-speed thrill ride, and bring the saga into the future era of the galaxy”.
The project was even entitled to a proper teaser, its release in cinemas being at the time scheduled for December 2023.

And yet, the project led by director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Monster) was finally deleted from Lucasfilm’s shelves last year, and was no longer “in active development”… till today.
Questioned by journalist Ben Mankiewicz in his TCM / Max podcast, the filmmaker announced that she had resumed work on this project, after the failure of the film Wonder Woman 1984 at the box office then the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3.
She tells : “When I left Star Wars to make Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I’d come back to Star Wars afterwards. So we made a deal to make this happen […]. When the project Wonder Woman 3 finally fell apart, Lucasfilm and I said we needed to finalize this deal […]. So now I owe them a Star Wars script, and we’ll see what happens next.”.
“The Lucasfilm teams have a difficult job ahead of them with the new film they are preparing”she continues. “They have other directors working, but now I’m back on Rogue Squadron and we’ll see what happens. We need to continue to develop it, and get the project to where we are all happy with it.”.
Will we finally see this film dedicated to the pilots of the famous X-Wing? Time will tell, and there is no doubt that we will have more information in the months to come. Who knows, maybe as early as May 4, the famous “Star Wars Day” is always rich in new information on the galactic franchise.
