Starting in the next few days: Faeser will probably announce border controls

Faeser will probably announce border controls

For weeks, there have been strict border controls in the fight against illegal migration about returns. The Union in particular is pushing for this. Interior Minister Faeser resisted for a long time and then held out the prospect of an audit. The result is now obviously clear. Checks will be carried out again in the next few days.

According to a report, Germany will again set up temporary stationary controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic in the coming days in the fight against illegal immigration. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will announce this tomorrow, Wednesday, reports Politico magazine, citing an unnamed official. These would then begin within a few days.

The SPD politician had actually already announced this in the morning. “We are first preparing stationary border controls. It’s about additional controls,” she said on Deutschlandfunk. “And we have to see what that brings.” For them, it is important “that we have staff in the area at the border,” because otherwise that would lead to displacement and people would then cross the border in other places. “If we catch smugglers, it will make a big difference, because at the moment we have the feeling that one in four or five people comes into the country via smugglers.”

The measures are most effective in close cooperation with neighboring countries. After the Czech Republic had already expressed its opinion about increased controls together with the German federal police, the same is also planned for Poland. The SPD politician also made it clear that stationary controls at borders with neighboring countries alone were not enough.

Most recently, Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stübgen pushed for a quick introduction. “I fundamentally welcome Nancy Faeser’s U-turn on stationary border controls – better late than never,” said the CDU politician. “Now it has to be a matter of how exactly the border controls will be designed. So far not much is known – but time is of the essence.” Faeser must register the border controls with the EU. According to the Interior Ministry, the Brandenburg Central Immigration Office counted more than 1,900 arrivals of refugees in September. That’s an average of 77 people per day, including 55 who entered the country illegally and were forwarded by the federal police.

There have currently been temporary stationary border controls in Bavaria on the border with Austria since autumn 2015. They are registered by the Federal Ministry of the Interior with the EU Commission and each time extended. The checks must be requested in Brussels about one month in advance.
