The best actress in the world will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival


After George Lucas and Studio Ghibli, actress Meryl Streep will receive an honorary Palme d’Or for her entire career at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Thirty-five years after winning the Best Actor Award at Cannes for the film A Cry in the Night, Meryl Streep returns to the Croisette to receive an honorary Palme d’Or, like George Lucas and Studio Ghibli , also haloed.

The American will be celebrated on the evening of the opening ceremony of the Festival, next Tuesday, May 14, before the screening of the film which will launch this 77th edition, The Second Act of Quentin Dupieux. With this award, the actress succeeds Jeanne Moreau, Marco Bellocchio, Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jane Fonda, Agnès Varda, Forest Whitaker and Jodie Foster.

A record at the Oscars

An honorary Palme d’Or is not so much of a surprise when we take into consideration the star’s immense career and the numerous records that accompany it. She has the most Oscar nominations – no less than 21! – for three awards – for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady. Only Katharine Hepburn surpasses her with four statuettes to her credit.
