Steam unveils its top games of the year, with New World, Apex and Valheim

It’s a top slightly different compared to other years, but some titles are still there and still present. As for several years, Steam has therefore made the ranking of the most popular games on its platform, with several categories. The main one concerns the games that generated the most turnover in 2021:

To calculate the total revenue for each game, we take into account its sales, in-game transactions, and DLC sales on Steam from January 1, 2021 through December 15, 2021. […]

Overall, over a third of the bestseller list is made up of games that had never been on it before. Many were released in 2021, but a handful of older titles made it into the top 100 thanks to the dedication of the development teams and the community.

We thus find Dota 2, PUBG, Apex Legends, CS: GO or GTA 5, best-sellers that no longer need to be presented. Almost half of it is free to download, and ultimately there are very few games from 2021: BF 2042 and Naraka Bladepoint are there, but also Valheim or New World, two very popular MMOs, find their place there.

Moreover, Steam has also made a list of the most profitable games but which are from the past year: we thus discover Halo Infinite, Back 4 Blood or Forza Horizon 5.

Finally, Valve has established a podium of the most popular games, i.e. those that have experienced peaks at over 200,000 players simultaneously on the store’s PC servers. Here again, there are many free-to-play (and not very recent), but a new kid not found in the other tops has made its mark: Cyberpunk 2077.
