Gutbub and Sutter shoot the Bernese Oberlanders to victory in the tourbillon. Sion is worried about direct promotion again.
Sion could have extended its lead at the top of the Challenge League to 8 points. Instead, coach Didier Tholot’s team lost 2-1 to their only serious rival, Thun, in the 26th round. The Valais reserve is only 2 points ahead of the Lustrinelli team.
Gutbub’s deja vu
Thun shocked Sion and the 9,800 spectators in the tourbillon early on. Marc Gutbub, who was inadequately covered, took the lead in the 3rd minute with a touchdown. The 21-year-old had already scored in Thun’s 3-2 win in Sion in September.
Reto Ziegler equalized from the penalty spot in the 39th minute after Thun keeper Mateo Matic knocked over Sion’s Dejan Sorgic. But defender Nicola Sutter headed the guests into luck (79th). In the emotional final phase, Thun’s Lucien Dähler saw yellow-red.
Even with 11 offensive forces (even keeper Timothy Fayulu was in the opponent’s penalty area), Sion was no longer able to equalize. This means that Thun has won 7 points in the 3 direct encounters so far – the main reason why the promotion race is more open than ever.

Schaffhausen beats Bellinzona
In the other Friday game, FC Schaffhausen beat Bellinzona 2-1 after falling behind and overtook the Ticino team thanks to the better goal difference.
