PARIS (Reuters) – STMicroelectronics and GlobalFoundries announced on Monday the creation of a new semiconductor factory in France.

The two groups mentioned an investment of “several billion euros” which will benefit from state support, without specifying the exact amount.

According to the Elysée, this investment, which is being unveiled as part of the fifth edition of the “Choose France” summit and which will be formally presented during a trip by Emmanuel Macron to the STMicroelectronics plant in Crolles, in Isère, on Tuesday in midday, will amount to 5.7 billion euros.

In its press release, STMicro promises the creation of around 1,000 jobs on the Crolles site, a figure confirmed by the Elysée.

This project is in line with the European Commission’s initiative to strengthen European sovereignty in the manufacture of chips. The EU executive is ready to devote 50 billion euros by 2030 to increase Europe’s share of global chip manufacturing to 20%.

At the French level, Emmanuel Macron will present Tuesday in Grenoble a plan of more than 5 billion euros to support the development of the microelectronics sector, “strategic for ecological and digital transitions”, within the framework of the orientations of France 2030 , said the Elysée.
