Waiting at the airport to connect can be annoying. We present 5 cities in Europe that are easy to reach from the airport. This is how it works with the mini city trip!

Anyone who flies on holiday often has to change planes – also because connections with a stopover are cheaper than the more comfortable non-stop flights. But what to do at airport other than staring at your phone or investing too much money in coffee, snacks and souvenirs?

We have an idea: there are a few airports in Europe that are great for a trip to the city. The travel portal Expedia has researched where you can sweeten the waiting time with sightseeing or a cappuccino on a seat in the sun. We present five cities that are ideal for a mini city trip from the airport.

1. Vienna

A stop in Vienna is particularly common for those who are on their way to Croatia or Albania. Fortunately, Vienna Airport has excellent connections to the city center: With the City Airport Train (CAT) you can reach the center of Vienna in 15 minutes. Depending on the weather, you can stroll through the city park from thereor visit the “MAK – Museum of Applied Arts”. The CAT runs every 30 minutes (round trip 24.90 euros).

2. Brussels

you fly over Brussels? The Belgian capital is not only politically important, there is also a lot to see. From the airport, a train will take you to Brussels Central Station in less than 30 minutes. From there it is only a few minutes’ walk to the famous Grand Place, where you can admire the magnificent baroque facades. There will definitely be time for a coffee with fresh Belgian waffles (round trip 20.60 euros).

3.Amsterdam

Actually you would need the third largest airport Don’t leave Europe at all to sweeten your waiting time. Because Schiphol Airport offers a shopping mile, spas, a casino, restaurants and even a branch of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. If you still want to go to the pretty city, there is a 15-minute connection to Amsterdam Centraal station (return ticket €9.80).

4. Lisbon

If your trip goes to Madeira, the Azores or Cape Verde, you usually have a longer stop in Lisbon, so it is often worth driving to the city. The airport is well connected to the metro network, with the red line you can be in the city center in around 20 minutes. There you can hop on the green line to go to Martim Moniz Square, where the historic tram line “El éctrico 28” starts. It takes you through the narrow streets of the old town to the Castelo de São Jorge on the highest mountain Lisbon’s. Or you can take a taxi for a good ten euros directly to the imposing Praça do Comércio on the Tagus and soak up a few rays of sunshine (24-hour ticket for the metro, buses and trams 6.60 euros).

5. Helsinki

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is a major hub in northern Europe with numerous connections to Asia. If you fancy a short visit to Helsinki before or after your trip to Asia, you can get there by P or I trainsin 30 minutes from the airport to the city center. From the main train station you can walk to Senate Square with the sparkling white cathedral in ten minutes – it is Helsinki’s landmark (return ticket 8.20 euros).
