Striezelmarkt: Dresden's famous Christmas market has been canceled

The Dresden Striezelmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. This time he will be canceled, as the city administration announced.

It is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world and has been held in Advent on the Altmarkt in Dresden since 1434: the Striezelmarkt. However, it will not take place this year. The city administration has now officially announced this. "The current situation does not allow any other decision," said Mayor Dirk Hilbert in a statement.

"Since no relaxation of the Corona regulations is foreseeable – quite the opposite – and a new timetable can be expected next week at the earliest, we no longer have a realistic option of holding the Striezelmarkt," continued Hilbert. He regrets this very much, but admits "that the partial lockdown has not yet had the effect that we wanted for the Advent season". The infection process in Dresden, but also especially in the surrounding districts, does not allow any other decision.
