Study: unmarried couples have more sex than married couples?

Funny thing: A hundred years ago, the question of who has more sex, married or unmarried couples, would not have arisen. After all, marriage was originally the prerequisite for sex. Nowadays it is only for a few communities or individual people. In any case, the absolute majority in Germany no longer waits to have sexual intercourse until they have put a ring on their fingers and sworn an oath. A survey by the dating portal Parship has clarified for us whether the sex life in Germany tends to stay the same, whether it is picking up or taking off.

Interviewed more than 1,000 people

The portal asked a good 1,000 people about their sex habits: how often do they have it, what is the biggest lust killer, how honestly do they deal with it when they don't feel like it. In terms of frequency, male and female respondents were very close to each other – in contrast to married and unmarried: While 30 percent of unmarried people said they had sex several times a week, only 19 percent of married people chose this answer. The majority of married couples in this study had sex at 27 percent several times a month, although "several times" in this survey means two to three times (there was also the option "once a week"). Of the unmarried respondents, 21 percent admitted to the latter answer.

The sum of several possible answers showed that 36 percent of unmarried couples have sex at least several times a week and 53 percent at least several times a month. Among the married respondents, only 23 percent came at least several times a week and 41 percent at least several times a month. So it is clear at the latest: According to the results of this study, unmarried couples have sex on average significantly more frequently than married couples – but probably only because the "unmarried" time in most couples overlaps with the phase of falling in love, and it is known that the physical attraction is greatest there. If the butterflies in the stomach give up at some point with increasing relationship length, the passion subsides in many couples, whether married or not. So as clear as the numbers in this study are, it does not mean that marriage would be a lust killer.
