Shaken by depression after the death of her mother, a mentally ill Styrian woman (48) decided to end her life – and “take her twelve-year-old daughter with her”. For this she took a cushion and tried to smother her child. The girl fought back so fiercely and was able to flee. A jury then referred the woman to a forensic therapeutic center.
A Styrian woman (48) has been plagued by depression since she was young. When her mother died earlier this year, her world collapsed: “She was my best friend, I could talk to her about everything. When she died, I no longer knew how to cope with everyday life, I just functioned,” says the former pharmaceutical representative. Even going to the supermarket caused her anxiety. “It’s so terrible what I’ve done.” She knew that she needed help. But even going to the psychiatrist, psychologist, family doctor, Caritas and the district authority and taking the appropriate medication could not alleviate her suffering, the pull grew stronger and stronger: “The illness quickly made me her tool.” was plagued by days of insomnia, suicidal thoughts alternated with panic attacks. Until she decided that only death could end her suffering. “Today I can’t believe what I did back then, it’s so horrible!” Cries and sobs the woman in front of the jury, which is chaired by judge Angelika Hacker Mother finds, she decided to smother the girl. She took a pillow and pressed it in the face of the sleeping girl. Then she also covered the mouth and nose of the twelve-year-old. In mortal fear, the girl fought back and was able to free herself: “Mom, you wanted to kill me!” she screamed and locked herself in the bathroom. At that moment, the woman realized what she had done. She also ran to the police, sobbing, and immediately confessed. Experts attested to her severe depression with psychotic symptoms and an anxiety disorder. She was not legally admitted.
