Surprise in Hollywood: Netflix beats Disney and Encanto at the Animation Oscars


By triumphing at the 2022 Annie Awards, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and Netflix have beaten the favorite, “Encanto”, and are well on their way to the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature.

The Mitchells did not just beat the machines: this Saturday, March 12, the Sony and Netflix film won eight trophies, including Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film, at the Annie Awards, equivalent to Oscars for the animation medium. And therefore defeated Disney and his foals, namely Raya and the last dragon, Luca and especially Encanto, who was a big favorite.

Thanks to this success, the feature film directed by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe takes the lead in the race for the Oscar for Best Animated Film, which will be awarded on March 28. Because seven of the ten previous winners of the Annie Award for Best Film then received the precious golden statuette.

If The Mitchells against the Machines were to triumph in two weeks, it would be another victory for Phil Lord and Chris Miller, here producers, three years after Spider-Man Next Generation which they had co-written.

ARCANE IN STRENGTH

Among the independents, also highlighted, Flee continued his harvest of prizes after his raid in Annecy, winning in particular in front of Le Sommet des Dieux. While waiting for the Oscars where he competes for three awards: Best Animated Film, Best Documentary Feature and Best Foreign Language Film.

And while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings took home the award for Best Character Animation in a Live-Action Motion Picture, Netflix also smashed the small-screen charts, with no less than nine trophies for the Arcane series, based on the League of Legends video game universe. Including that of the Best Television Production (excluding programs for children).
