Sustainability – surefooted into a green future

The “Woody” factory in Müllnern has been producing wooden shoes for 101 years – now the family business wants to give the valuable raw material back to nature.

“Sustainability is not a buzzword for us, but a tradition,” says junior boss Sandro Piroutz, now the 4th generation in the unique shoe manufacturer. Because each example is equipped with the special and durable wooden sole: “Flexible, with elevations and curves for pleasant, comfortable wearing.” 40,000 pairs per year 35 work steps are necessary to produce the perfect “Woody”, which was introduced in 1922 as a wooden base for the stable – and field work, then established itself as a professional clog before conquering all heel heights and depths in recent years. From trendy glitter sandals to designer boots with the signature of the late fashion icon Vivienne Westwood – 40,000 pairs of these are manufactured in Sittersdorf every year 35 employees; made from Burgenland willow wood and Italian leather. “Of course we need a lot of wood,” says Piroutz. “And that’s why we now want to give something back to nature.” For example, in the form of 1,500 trees that were reforested as a mixed forest between Vellach and Sittersdorf Or using a large photovoltaic system and a silo in which the entire system can be supplied with wood waste. It goes without saying that employees and customers can charge their electric cars for free. This much eco-commitment is worth a nomination for the KWF Sustainability Prize, which will be awarded on October 20th at Weißensee. The “Krone” presents the candidates in cooperation with the Carinthian Science Association.
