ZURICH (Reuters) – The Swiss will be able to legally change their sex simply by going to civil registration from January 1, putting the country at the forefront of the European movement for gender self-determination.

Along with Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Norway, Switzerland is one of the few countries on the continent that allows a person to legally change their sex without hormone therapy, medical diagnosis or complex administrative procedures.

Anyone aged 16 and over, who is not under legal guardianship, will thus be able to change their sex and first name by means of a simple declaration to the civil status.

Younger persons and persons placed under the protection of an adult will need the consent of their guardian.
