For several months, Chinese military aircraft have been making inroads into Taiwan’s air defense zone. China considers that the island and its 24 million inhabitants belong to its territory. Facing it, the United States in particular, which defends Taiwanese independence.

Beijing accuses Washington of blowing on the embers and playing the Taiwan card to try to weaken China. But the People’s Republic warns that it will not let it go and even says it is ready for war. In response to the US defense minister, who accuses China of carrying out provocative and destabilizing military activities around Taiwan, his Chinese counterpart warned Washington.

“We will fight at all costs”

“Let me be clear: if anyone dares to separate Taiwan from China, we will not hesitate to fight. We will fight at all costs and we will fight until the end. This is the only choice for China,” Wei Fenghe, China’s Defense Minister, said Sunday in Singapore.

Taiwan, an independent and democratic island

Taiwan is worried about this warlike rhetoric and says it is ready for a dialogue with Beijing, based on equality and without preconditions. Unacceptable for China, which considers Taiwan as an integral part of its territory. The Island, which is not recognized as a sovereign state at the UN, is however protected by the United States and de facto independent and democratic.
