Taiwan to receive first doses of Novavax COVID vaccine this week

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center said the 504,000 doses would arrive at Taipei’s main international airport on Thursday.

Taiwan is expected to receive 2.268 million doses of the Novavax vaccine in batches this year through the COVAX mechanism, he added.

The vaccine is not yet authorized in the United States, but its use in adults is authorized in more than 40 countries, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The company’s COVID-19 vaccine has been shown to be more than 90% effective in two large late-stage trials.

So far, Taiwan has used the domestically developed AstraZeneca PLC, Moderna Inc, BioNTech SE/Pfizer Inc and Medigen vaccines.

The Taiwanese population is well vaccinated, more than 70% of the inhabitants having received a first booster, the second boosters being deployed.

The island of 23 million people has reported more than 3.7 million infections since the start of the year, when the pandemic was so far well contained, although new cases are now on the decline.
