The Chinese manufacturer is working on a system using spatial audio to broadcast two audio streams simultaneously.

The next major version of ColorOS, the operating system that powers OPPO smartphones, but also realme phones, is starting to reveal some secrets.

Two audio streams at the same time, with spatial audio

The Chinese manufacturer offers a beta of the next ColorOS, which will run on Android 14, and a few lines of code suggest that the brand is working on a new audio device that is rather clever on paper.

This device will be named Holo Audio and would use spatial audio to stream two simultaneous audio channels. By using the spatialization offered by the system, it would be possible for example to listen to an album with headphones, and at the same time to hear the indications of its GPS or its voice assistant on one side of the stage space.

The various references to Holo Audio rather evoke two video streams played in parallel, with the possibility of listening to them without obtaining an inaudible hubbub in the ears.

Special headphones or earphones are required to test this new feature.

Holo Audio would give full latitude to the user to best configure the sound reproduction produced by the headphones. A menu would make it possible to choose where to place the two streams in the stage space in order to clearly understand one and the other when listening. For those in a hurry, an automatic mode would also be included and would take care of the management of the two sound sources on its own.

Navigation, music streaming, audiobook and video applications could benefit from it, as well as audio calls (to place its correspondents on either side of the audio space), but not video games, which would stay on one channel.

To benefit from it, users will also need to invest in a smartphone compatible with spatial sound and suitable wireless headphones. It is not yet known if OPPO intends to offer this feature to its already available models, or if it only reserves it for future smartphones of its own and its associated brands.

This new version of ColorOS is still in the testing phase, and the manufacturer has not given any indication as to its release date. Patience is therefore required before testing this surprising feature, but which could be of interest to users who love to do several things at once.
