Anyone who can only see enough with daytime running lights despite poor visibility – for example in rain, snow or fog – must not forget that most cars are not illuminated at the rear in this condition. It is therefore important that in dubious lighting conditions you always drive with dipped headlights instead of just daytime running lights.

Of course, it is practical that the “automatic” function of the light switch in modern cars saves us having to switch the low beam on and off at dusk or when driving through tunnels. However, because this automatic light only reacts to differences in brightness, it does not work if the view is obstructed by fog, smoke, snow or heavy rain, and with relative brightness at the same time. Therefore, in such situations, despite the automatic light, you should reach for the light switch and turn on the low beam.

Fog light: only if really necessary

Of course, it is important to have a good view of the road in front of the car. It is just as important that you are noticed by other road users in good time. But these must not be dazzled. If the driver in front of you is following almost blindly due to the permanently switched on rear fog light, this does not increase road safety.

Fog lamps may only be switched on when visibility is severely restricted. If visibility improves, they must be switched off again immediately, otherwise other road users will be dazzled, especially at night or when it is wet. Anyone who falsely drives with fog lights can be fined. The fine is 40 francs. Incidentally, the use of the fog lights is also forbidden at night on winding roads when visibility is good. In addition, the fog lights must not be “misused” as daytime running lights.
