Tesla greatly improves its car cameras in an update

An update to Tesla vehicles focuses on on-board cameras and significantly improves them, especially in low light conditions. Models equipped with hardware version HW3 are affected.

Having increasingly sophisticated electric cars, with complex software systems, has a big advantage and a big disadvantage. The latter is that if there is a breakdown, the repair will not be as simple as changing the oil filter on a thermal model. In return, the vehicle is regularly improved thanks to deployment of updates which fix bugs, add features or modify existing ones.

It is this last scenario that interests us here. At Tesla, the latest update makes on-board cameras visibly more effectiveespecially when ambient light is low. A driver shows us X (Twitter) how “game-changing” it is, in his own words. In the photo on the left, we can see that the images are blurry at the edges, and above all that the photo has a very pronounced red tint. On the right, after the update, the captures are sharp and the colors normal. The difference is striking.

Latest Tesla update makes cameras much more efficient

Improving on-board cameras is very important. They are what allow the use of functions such as fully autonomous driving. More generally, the Tesla driving system is based on what the car’s cameras capture, so it is important that the information collected is as accurate as possible. They are also the ones who send data to train the manufacturer’s global neural network, responsible for analyzing the images and interpreting them to help the car “learn” how to react.

Tesla has not yet indicated which models are affected by the update, but based on feedback, these are the ones equipped HW3 (Hardware 3.0). This includes Model S and Model
