Tesla is recalling more than 362,000 vehicles in the United States due to safety issues with its Full Self-Driving Beta (FSD Beta) software.
The FSD Beta software “allows a vehicle to exceed speed limits or cross intersections illegally and unpredictably, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to a recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
To fix the issues, Tesla will release a free over-the-air (OTA) software update, the agency said. The company is expected to notify customers by mail by April 15.
Hitchhiking without stopping
The recall applies to vehicles that are already equipped with the FSD Beta software, as well as cars on which the installation is in progress. These are certain Model S and Model X cars from 2016-2023, Model 3 from 2017-2023 and Model Y from 2020-2023.
While performing an engineering analysis of Tesla cars, NHTSA found that the FSD Beta system could allow a vehicle to perform dangerous movements, such as driving through an intersection in a straight line while in a cornering lane. The software also allowed a vehicle to enter an intersection controlled by a stop sign without coming to a complete stop. The agency also found that the system’s response to speed limit changes was inadequate.
NHTSA is continuing to investigate Tesla’s Autopilot system and related vehicle systems. If a Tesla customer wishes to contact the company regarding this issue, they should call Tesla Customer Service.
