Good news, the “standard” steering wheel is back as standard on Model S and X, while the controversial Yoke steering wheel remains available, as you wish.

From April 2023, you can also ask Tesla to replace your Yoke steering wheel with a standard one… for 900 euros!

Farewell little Yoke gone too soon

Tesla appreciates cultivating the difference between its vehicles and the rest of the market. And among the most eccentric distinctions thought up by the firm, we find in particular the Yoke steering wheel. For those who haven’t seen one yet, these steering wheels quite simply allow the driver to take himself for Harrison Ford at the controls of the Millennium Falcon. We’re hardly exaggerating, because with its rectangular shape, it’s more like having a gamepad in hand suitable for console vehicle racing enthusiasts than a traditional car steering wheel.

Delivered as standard on the Tesla Model S as well as the Tesla Model X, this Yoke steering wheel did not really appeal to the owners of these vehicles. A rejection that Tesla CEO Elon Musk didn’t really care about for a long time, as you can see in response to a tweet above from July 2021. But that’s now a thing of the past, because it’s now possible, for the new versions of the Model S and X, to benefit from a standard steering wheel as standard.

Good news for those who would like to buy one of these vehicles, but who would have been slowed down in their electric momentum by the Yoke steering wheel. And as good news never comes alone, the choice of steering wheel, whether standard or Yoke, does not imply any change in cost when purchasing the vehicle.

10:10 a.m. with the Yoke in hand…well, it’s almost impossible

Other Tesla users with Yoke steering wheels have also complained of limited grip at low speeds, as well as less responsiveness when driving in an adverse environment. This is for example the case of driving on ice, as reported by Electrek. With Tesla’s success in the Nordic countries, the argument has even greater scope.

The Yoke steering wheel also has several tactile buttons, such as the indicators or the horn, which can be operated directly by the right and left thumbs. Again, this does not fail to confuse when some have been, for decades, accustomed to a completely different system. However, even by choosing the standard steering wheel, these touch controls remain.

In any case, this is enough to reassure driving instructors who are so concerned that your hands are well positioned at 10:10 a.m. on the steering wheel (including after obtaining the license!), because on Tesla Model S and X, this is again possible.
