Test run in France: Netflix tries linear television

The streaming service Netflix is inspired by classic television. Without having to decide on a film or a series, the customers of the US company should in future be showered with videos. It remains to be seen whether the function will come to Germany.

You no longer have to decide for yourself what is going on: the streaming service Netflix is testing a linear channel in France. The new TV-like offer was launched last week for some customers and should be available to all users in France by the beginning of December, the US company announced.

"In France, traditional television is still very popular with people who just want to 'sit back' without having to choose a particular program." The new feature is called "Direct". It is a real-time service in which pre-determined content is shown. So instead of having to decide on a film or series, users can just look at it like watching TV. When asked, the company confirmed that France is currently the only country where this function is being tested. First, the specialist portal Heise Online reported on the test.

Netflix had recently reportedly also tested a kind of random playback that is based on user preferences. According to a study from October, the television set has become a bit more important again in German households in the Corona times. In connection with this, the daily use of classic TV programs – by which the broadcasters' continuous programming is meant – increased again after years.
