Maeva, a Frenchwoman who emigrated to Australia, is (well) paid to be rude to customers in a very, very original restaurant! A specialty that has made her a star of social networks.
“Do you want some salt? Ben, open your eyes, it’s on the next table! For dessert, mate, you’re waiting. I don’t just have you to serve!” It’s simple, in this restaurant, the waitress is simply terrible! “Yeah, yeah, and I assume”she dares to proclaim. Maeva Carpaye, French hired in July at short noticedoes not hesitate to openly reprimand customers, serves them at snail’s speed and allows himself to tell them to “get by” when fatigue asks them. She lives in Gold Coast, a charming Australian seaside town on the edge of the Pacific.
“After the service, my two young bosses congratulate me if I have been very obnoxious”she assures. “My cover letter caught their eye. I assured that already, being FrenchI couldn’t be kind and that I hated mankind.” We think we are dreaming, but no, such is the concept of the restaurant chain Karen’s Diner, created in the United States and spreading around the world, before arriving, one day perhaps, in France. Its motto ? “Best burger, worst service.”

“Of course, people come here to have a laugh. Some are funny, to the point that sometimes I have to hold myself back not to be nice”explains Maeva. The only thing that bothers her is the presence of the children, to whom she sets a deplorable example. For the 23-year-old, bilingual after a year in Los Angeles, this composition role is almost training: “I had gone to LA to take acting lessons to become an actress. Then, after containmentI branched off to Australia.”
When she arrives there in March, she finds a job in a bowling alley and at Karen’s Diner, which offers her a job, unexpected and artistic in its own way. “It was my French girlfriends who encouraged me to respond to the ad, because I am odious … No, in fact, I am hyperactive, she corrects. So spontaneous that I leave sentences without filter, not hesitating to call assholes those who are really assholes. No malice there. It’s just that the truth eludes me!”explains Maeva, able to be as extroverted as locked in her thoughts.

His talent for admiringly “the mouth” makes the happiness of the customers, who ask for more. Maeva lives overbooked: “I often work from late morning to midnight, going bowling to Karen’s or vice versa. I didn’t even have time to go to the beach!” She hasn’t had time to look for a studio either and shares a room with four girls in a youth hostel, but she’s only there to sleep. She focuses on the chance to be paid $27 (about €28) per hour, a little over the Australian minimum wageand double on weekends, not including tips.
A job and a country whose merits she praises on the videos of her TikTok account, Maevadb, which have earned her a million views and 22,000 subscribers in one month.
