Thales: a first radar station powered by solar power

(CercleFinance.com) – Thales unveiled on Wednesday the world’s first air traffic control radar station powered by solar energy, a project carried out in collaboration with the General Directorate of Civil Aviation in Chile.

This radar system, intended for civil and military air traffic control, detects both slow and fast targets such as helicopters, commercial planes and jets.

The site should also help monitor commercial flights operated daily by the Chilean DGAC.

Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, at more than 3,500 meters above sea level, the station will operate exclusively with sustainable energy by exploiting the region’s high solar incidence.

Featuring 340 strategically positioned panels, the station has a maximum production capacity of approximately 960 kWh per day, covering an area of 10,000 m2.
