Dual monitor support is one of the exciting features unveiled with Apple’s new MacBook Air M3. When the lid of the M3 Air 13-inch or 15-inch is closed, you can view the screen on two external monitors at the same time. One of the external monitors can display the screen with a resolution of up to 6K at 60Hz, while the resolution of the second monitor can be up to 5K at 60Hz.
Imagine the type of work you can do with all that display space.
But what about those who bought the M3 MacBook Pro launched last October? You’re in luck. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that a planned software update for the 14-inch MacBook Pro will give it the same capability. And the dual screen feature will work the same on the M3 MacBook Pro as it does on the M3 Air.
New for the M series
Apple did not reveal when or how the update would be available. In its article, 9to5Mac cites the 14-inch model of the MacBook Pro, but does not mention the 16-inch variant. I’ve contacted Apple for clarification and will update this article if I get further details.
Support for more than one external monitor is a new feature for MacBooks with Apple’s M-series chips. The M1 and M2 MacBooks can only display their screens on a single external monitor, even when the lid is closed.
But more expensive models with higher-end M chips have always been able to work with multiple displays. A MacBook Pro with an M2 Pro or M3 Pro chip can handle up to two external displays, while a MacBook Pro with an M2 Max or M3 Max chip can juggle four external displays at once.
Aside from dual-screen support, the new MacBook Air M3 offers faster performance than the M1 and M2 variants, as well as support for Wi-Fi 6e. For the rest, most of the technical characteristics are identical to those of the M2 model.
