The Apple Studio Display will work well on Windows, but with limited functionality

The new Apple Studio Display will be able to work under Windows like any other monitor, but it will then be necessary to give up certain features such as automatic temperature adjustment (True Tone), the “centered frame” and Hey Siri.

Earlier this week, Apple unveiled its new Studio Display, a 27-inch 5K IPS model that features a 12-megapixel camera, three noise-canceling microphones, and an audio system with six speakers. Not to mention an Apple A15 Bionic processor which offers new features such as face detection and image adjustment when using the webcam, or activation of the Apple assistant via the voice command “Dis Siri”.

The monitor is of course optimized to work best with a Mac and the macOS operating system, but it can also operate under Windows like a conventional monitor. The PC must have a USB-C output and must be able to support a definition of 5120 x 2880 pixels, the native definition of the 27-inch Studio Display panel. However, several features are disabled:

  • True Tone : This feature automatically adjusts color temperature based on ambient light using the built-in light sensor, and requires a Mac.
  • Centered frame : if the webcam is well taken care of under Windows, the “centered frame” functionality which allows you to adjust the frame according to the position of the face(s) on the screen is not available under Windows.
  • Say Siri : the three microphones are also functional under Windows, but the Hey Siri functionality which makes it possible to invoke the Apple assistant is obviously only available on Mac (Siri is not available under Windows).
  • Firmware update : At this time, Apple does not provide tools to update the internal software of the display under Windows. You definitely need a Mac.

The sound system should also work under Windows. However, support for spatial audio, including Dolby Atmos on Windows, is unconfirmed. As a reminder, the Apple Studio Display monitor is already on sale on the Apple site for €1,750 in its basic version and €2,000 with the nano-textured anti-reflective treatment.
