The arrival of advertising in Amazon Prime Video films and series is imminent

Ads in Amazon Prime Video are coming starting January 29, 2024, first in a handful of countries. In France, it will be a little later in the year. Escaping it will be possible, but you will have to pay extra.

Advertising on Amazon Prime Video is coming, and escaping it will require spending a few euros more each month. This is the notification that the subscription video on demand (SVOD) giant is sending to its customers, Engadget noted on December 27. The platform is thus embarking on a path already taken by Netflix and Disney+ previously.

France concerned later in 2024

The deployment of Amazon streaming advertising is scheduled to start on January 29, 2024 and this concerns a few markets in America (United States and Canada) and Europe (United Kingdom and Germany). Other countries will be targeted later in the year, including Italy, Spain, Mexico, Australia and, most importantly, France. The deadline is not yet indicated.

Under Amazon Prime Video’s new advertising regime, customers will still have to pay their subscription to access the streaming catalog, to which additional payment will be added if they want to avoid advertising. This is announced at 3 dollars per month, which will cost 2 or 3 euros in France, at the time of its deployment.

Today, Amazon Prime Video is integrated into the Prime subscription. This costs 69.90 euros per year (or a little less than 5.9 euros per month). There is also a monthly price of 6.9 euros. With the advertising mechanism desired by the service, the price of the platform would then be close to 10 euros per month. We are thus approaching the prices applied by the rest of the market.

The distribution of advertisements only concerns content seen in streaming as part of SVOD. There will be no one for people renting or buying films or series on its platform. The duration of these advertisements is not yet clear, nor their number per time slot: however, it must be less than television advertising breaks, according to Amazon.
