The installation of the temporary stadiums of Versailles, Concorde and the Eiffel Tower, three emblematic sites of the Paris Olympic Games, began at the beginning of March, less than five months before the global sporting event (July 26 – 11 august).
At the Palace of Versailles, host of the horse riding events, “the stadium is already half built”announced Lambis Konstantinidis, director of planning and coordination of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Cojop).
In the capital, the 30,000-seat stadium currently being built on the Place de la Concorde will host the so-called urban sports events (BMX freestyle, breakdancing, skateboarding and three-person basketball) of the Olympic Games, as well as the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games (August 28 – September 8). The eastern part of the largest square in Paris is cut off from traffic and the 19th century street lampse century are protected by wooden structures.
Further west, the assembly of the stands of the ephemeral stadium of the Eiffel Tower, which will host beach volleyball, began on Monday March 4 in the center of the Champ-de-Mars, the town hall confirmed to Agence France-Presse from 7e borough.
Consequently, traffic is closed on the square and the avenue which usually allow cars to cross the esplanade, reports the district town hall. “Alternative solutions have been found” for the next six months concerning the neighborhood’s bus stops, specifies the team of the mayor of 7e district, Rachida Dati.
In all, seven temporary sites will be set up in highly touristy places in the capital: Eiffel Tower, Champ-de-Mars, Place du Trocadéro, Pont Alexandre-III, Esplanade des Invalides, Place de la Concorde and Place de l’Hôtel -de-Ville.
In these sectors, depending on the installation schedules of the installations and the lane closures that they imply, “the diversions will gradually be put in place” for bus lines, explained Ile-de-France Mobilités, the region’s transport authority.
