Manufacturer Tern has updated its HSD electric cargo bike, with some nice upgrades to the menu. New engine, more weight supported and smart structural components are up to date.
The Taiwanese manufacturer Tern has a reputation of choice in the field of electric bikes, especially in the cargo (longtail) and compact niche. In the middle of 2023, the company decided to give a little boost facelift to one of its models, the HSD, we learn in an official press release.
The first version of 2019 will thus be replaced by a much more modern model, and above all equipped with more suitable components. The first big change is at the engine level: finished the Bosch Active Line Plus with a torque of 50 Nm, up to the Performance Line with a torque of 75 Nm.
All Bosch connected functions
If this gain is commendable, however, we could have expected an even more powerful Bosch motor, such as the Performance Line CX (85 Nm) or more simply the Cargo Line (85 Nm) specially cut for this type of vehicle. After all, a freighter is intended to transport people or loads: having as much torque as possible is essential to ensure good dynamism.
The presence of components stamped Smart System can console us. In doing so, this Tern accesses all Bosch connected functions, including security systems (alarm, GPS, motion sensors) thanks to the Bosch ConnectModule chip integrated as standard. A good point.
Tern explains that he consolidated his HSD 2023 in two places: the head tube and the bottom bracket, respectively stiffer by 15 and 39%. Consequences: the bike is able to support a maximum gross weight of 180 kg, compared to 170 kg on the 2019 version. The luggage rack ensures 80 kg, i.e. 20 kg more than the old generation.
Less than 5000 euros
For the moment, the Taiwanese company communicates on a single model, when its predecessor was entitled to three variants (S +, S8i and P9) whose main differences are in the transmissions (derailleur, belt, continuously variable). No doubt more information will be released in the coming weeks.
The Tern HSD 2023 is expected in Europe this summer, at the recommended price of 4699 euros.
