After bringing him back in season 2 of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm decided to grant him his own series: The Book of Boba Fett. It was also announced in a somewhat special way: in the form of a post-generic scene from the last episode of The Mandalorian.

?Who is Boba Fett?

Boba Fett is a bounty hunter, like Din Djarin (the hero of The Mandalorian). Unlike the latter, Boba is a character who has existed for a long time in the saga, since he appeared in 1980 in The Empire Strikes Back. He’s also not a Mandalorian, despite what his armor suggests. Here’s a quick biography:

A model father (in every sense of the word)

We cannot approach the story of Boba Fett without starting with that of his illustrious father, Jango fett. He is one of the best bounty hunters in the Galaxy. He is hired by Count Dooku to serve as a genetic basis for an army of clones created by the master geneticists of Kamino. With other bounty hunters, he trains the Clones who become the forces of the Grand Republican Army (which will be the pillar of the Clone wars).

Jango Fett accepted Count Dooku’s proposal on one condition: that the geneticists of Kamino provide him with an unaltered clone (life expectancy identical to that of a human and growth at normal speed). This is how is born Boba fett. He received an education and military training on Kamino. At the dawn of the Clone Wars, he leaves his home planet towards Geonosis where his father is killed in a duel against the Jedi master Mace windu (Attack of the Clones).

Boba Fett then begins his long ascent in the world of bounty hunters. He is first trained by Aurra sing with whom he founded a group (you can find the adventures of young Boba Fett in the Clone Wars animated series, especially in season 2 of it). He is captured by the Republic, but escapes from prison and works for a time with Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku’s apprentice.

Jabba the Hutt employee

During the period of the Empire, he became one of the employees of the very famous baron of the underworld, Jabba the Hutt. The latter entrusts him, as well as other bounty hunters, with the mission of finding and capturing Han Solo, with the only constraint not to kill him. In episode 5, “The Empire Strikes Back”, Boba Fett, allied to the Empire and dark Vador, manages to get his hands on the pilot of the Millennium Falcon after setting a trap on Bespin. The bounty hunter brings the fugitive back to Tatooine where Jabba can display it like a trophy.

At the start of Episode 6 (Return of the Jedi), Jabba captures Leia, Chewbacca and Luke. While the latter is about to serve as a meal at Sarlacc, a desert creature from Tatooine (a kind of gaping hole with razor-blade-shaped teeth, which digests its victims for hundreds of years), he manages to free his friends. During the fight, Han Solo damages Boba Fett’s backbone reactor which, after swerving, ends up in the creature’s mouth. This is where the official story of Boba Fett ended up to now.

For 40 years, the Extended Universe has served us several versions of its survival, and we don’t count the fanfiction either. With The Book of Boba Fett, Lucasfilm wants to put everything back on track.

Return from the dead (spoiler alert ?)

But, from the start of season 2 of Mandalorian, a twist: boba fett’s armor is found… but its owner is not in it! It is Cobb Vanth, the marshal of the small town of Mos Pelgo on Tatooine, who wears it. He agrees to return the armor to Din Djarin in exchange for a service. The latter takes the armor with him.

What to watch before Boba Fett?

Boba Fett isn’t a new character, so he has a Star Wars passive. In order to fully understand its history, it is best to watch other Lucasfilm productions before getting started.

The original trilogy is first and foremost an indispensablee (Episode 4, 5 and 6). In addition to introducing the character of Boba and revealing his fate to us before the series, it allows us to understand the context in which his new adventure takes place. We are however sure that if you are reading these lines, it is because you have seen these three films (available on Disney +). Few people today have not seen even one episode …

You will understand, The Book of Boba Fett is embedded in a much larger universe and the creators assume that you have a minimum of keys to understand the scenario and the universe.

? What is the cast of The Book of Boba Fett?

folder series boba fett 2
Ming-Na Wen, as Fennec Shand

The series’ cast builds on continuity. So you find the same actors there for the same characters. Here are the actors:

  • Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett

Of course, the hero is present in the series that bears his name. He is played by Temuera Morrison. Besides the fact that he already plays Boba Fett in the second season of The Mandalorian, he is a scriptwriter logical choice. Indeed, Temuera Morrison already played Jango Fett and all the clone troopers in the films “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”. Since Jango Fett has served as a role model for all of the clones and Boba Fett is one, it is only natural that this is the same actor who plays father and son.

  • Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand

Fennec Shand is back in service. Very present in the second season of The Mandalorian, she participated in the conquest of Jabba the Hutt’s landmark on Tatooine. The Bounty Hunter is played by Ming-Na Wen who has played Fennec Shand since the first season of The Mandalorian.

? Summary of episodes

Warning, we’re going to shamelessly spoil it in this part. Logical, since these are the episodes summaries! Key moments will be revealed. Be careful if you want to keep the surprise, then!

Summary of episode 1:

This very first episode intertwines two different eras in order to tell us different stories.

The first one takes place just after Return of the Jedi. Boba is then stuck in the belly of Sarlacc, condemned to die forgotten by all… but it is bad to know the bounty hunter! With the help of his flamethrower, he manages to kill the monster from the inside and then to extricate himself from its carcass.

Exhausted and on the verge of death, he collapses in the Tatooine Desert. After being stripped of his armor (this story is told in The Mandalorian) by Jawas, he is captured by men of the sands (Tuskens looters). The latter treat him as a slave. He tries to escape, but without success. Then led to the depths of the desert, one of the looters orders him to dig in order to find water. No luck, he stumbles upon a huge monster instead! While the creature is about to bite his jailer, Boba jumps on him and manages to strangle him with his chain. The bounty hunter then returns to the camp of the men of the sands who end up showing him their respect.

Boba

The second adventure takes place seven years later, just after The Mandalorian. Boba took the place of Jabba the Hutt (died during Return of the Jedi) and must now manage his criminal empire. As he conducts his business in the streets of Mos Esley, our hero is attacked by strange warriors. He barely comes out of it and Fennec manages to capture one. Who are they ? What do they want? Answer in the next episode …
