The British paid to host Ukrainian refugees?

Po come to the aid of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian offensive, British Housing Minister Michael Gove announced on Sky News on Sunday the establishment of the “Homes for Ukraine” program. Exclusively reserved for Ukrainian refugees, this route of entry into British territory should allow thousands of them to obtain a home, but also to access all public services and social assistance for three years. The English government encourages its citizens to “sponsor” exiles by offering them a room, or any other accommodation, free of charge for a minimum period of six months. As a sign of gratitude, the executive undertakes to pay 350 pounds (415 euros) monthly to the volunteers, reports International mailMonday, March 14.

As for local authorities, they will receive 10,000 pounds, or 11,900 euros, per refugee hosted on their territory. The operation of this sponsorship system seems simplistic on the surface, but certain injunctions leave residents and associations perplexed.

The protocol requires Britons to share the names of sponsored Ukrainians before receiving them. The contact must have been established upstream, via social networks or the dedicated government platform. For the humanitarian associations interviewed by The Daily Telegraph, “this program erects unnecessary new barriers” and favors people who “already have links with the United Kingdom”. The public authorities plan to involve NGOs, which could serve as intermediaries.
