A fortress that Israeli researchers uncovered and which will be open to visitors from Tuesday is around 3,200 years old.

  • According to the ancient authorities, the 18 by 18 meter facility was built by the Canaanites in the middle of the 12th century BC as a defense against the advance of the Philistines at that time.
  • Before the Israelites, the Canaanites lived in the area that corresponds to modern-day Israel and Lebanon, as well as parts of Jordan and Syria. The Philistines appeared in the Middle East in the late Bronze Age and colonized influential cities on the Mediterranean coast, such as Ashkelon and Gaza.
  • The fortress was found during excavations near Kiriat Gat. The find allows "an insight into the geopolitical reality described in the (biblical) book of judges, in which the Canaanites, Israelites and Philistines fought each other".
