A GPS chip, an AirTag in particular, made it possible to locate and find, on Christmas Day, the figurines of a nativity scene installed in Loire-Atlantique. Except that for the latter, the ending is not so happy.

Well, I might as well warn you right away, the story of the santons in the crèche of the Saint-Pierre church in Ancenis-Saint-Géréon does not end as well as one might hope. If technology did its part, thanks to the always very useful AirTag hidden in one of the stolen characters, the miracle ultimately did not take place, with the figurines found in a pitiful state. Let’s come back to this incredible story.

Stolen figurines located on Christmas Day using AirTag

For Father Yvon and Father Benoît, the problems started well before Christmas. A first figurine was stolen from them on December 8, before another disappeared only three days later. The Saint-Joseph d’Ancenis middle and high school then lent its character of the Virgin Mary to the church, inserting an AirTag, Apple’s GPS tracker, inside.

You have to believe they did well! Because on December 24, Christmas Eve, several figurines from the church’s nativity scene were stolen. Again. The theft was noticed on the 24th in the afternoon, and good news did not take long to arrive.

The next day, December 25 and therefore Christmas Day, the stolen figurines were located in a street in Ancenis, the time to thank the very effective AirTag not having arrived. Because what followed was a hunt for plaster figures!

A signal that put the priests on the right track, only to be disappointed

Following the GPS signal emitted by the AirTag, the priests from different parishes in the surrounding area then try to go to the location indicated by the tracker. Alas, without success, even if they were on the right track. It was only once back at the presbytery that things could move.

The men of faith were contacted by a person informing them that they had located not far away the four stolen figures and the glasses from the photo frames, which were thrown out of a window, onto the public highway. When they went there, they could only see the damage: sadly broken figurines were picked up. A very small consolation.
