The Fires of Love: these stars of the soap opera who have left us

Jeanne Cooper, Kristoff St. John, Jerry Douglas… These star actors of “The Young and the Restless” sadly passed away today. AlloCiné invites you to pay tribute to them through our slideshow.

Since the creation of The Young and the Restless in 1973 in the United States, many dramas have taken place in Genoa City… Alas, sometimes, fiction has joined reality and it is the interpreters of the characters that we have so loved who left us… AlloCiné also offers you here to pay tribute to them through our slideshow.

Jeanne Cooper, Kristoff St. John, Jerry Douglas…

One of the most notable deaths among the actors of the cult soap opera is that of Jeanne Cooper. The star slipped into the skin of Katherine Chancellor since the launch of the series. She also held this role for 40 years, until 2013, the year of her death! Never forgotten, the protagonist has reappeared several times in the plots thanks to flashbacks or “appearance” scenes. A park where fictional heroes wander still bears his name!

Unforgettable actors and characters

Also, how can we forget Jerry Douglas who played John? Killed in 2006, the patriarch of the Abbott clan however also returned to The Young and the Restless (whose date of return to TF1 has been communicated), in particular in sequences where he preached the good word to Jack (Peter Bergman), often plagued by existential crises…

Kristoff St. John, finally, saw his destiny shattered when his schizophrenic son committed suicide in 2014. Devastated, the interpreter of Neil Winters found himself stuck in a downward spiral until his own death in 2019, at the age of 52… His playmates in the series always describe him in the same way by qualifying him as a sunny, funny and hardworking person. Find it below in our slideshow.

Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor)

The actress played the great Katherine Chancellor, one of Genoa City’s most powerful women, from her soap opera debut in 1973 until her death in 2013. She was then the last historical cast member! The star was carried away because of respiratory failure, linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in relation to tobacco. After his death, The Fires of Love often paid tribute to him through nostalgia sequences.

Jerry Douglas (John Abbott)

Backgrid USA / Bestimage

The one who played John Abbott between 1982 and 2006 on a regular basis (then occasionally until 2016) died at the age of 88, a few days before his birthday, in 2021. For a long time, many viewers have regretted the death of the character in the 2000s. His returns to the series then occurred in flashbacks or “appearances”, like a ghost! Shortly before passing away, Jerry Douglas hit the sets of The Young and the Restless and had a great time with his fictional family. A tribute episode was dedicated to him in June 2023 in the United States.

Andrea Evans (Patty Williams)

Backgrid USA / Bestimage

The actress was the most outstanding interpreter of Patty Williams in the 1980s. Subscriber to soap operas, viewers could see her in You only live once, Passions but also Love, glory and beauty. Andrea Evans died on July 9, 2023 following a battle with cancer. As a reminder, the character of Patty Williams in The Young and the Restless was recast in 2009 and played by Stacy Haiduk.

The former star of MASH (a cult series in the United States) only appeared in The Young and the Restless for a few months. She played Constance, a diminished and wealthy old lady with whom Adam (played at the time by Justin Hartley) was close. Sally Kellerman died in 2022, aged 84, in a nursing home in Los Angeles.

Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters)

At the end of 2014, the actor mourned the death of his son Julian, who committed suicide. After this tragic loss, the actor never managed to climb the slope… The interpreter of Neil Winters died on February 3, 2019, his autopsy revealed that he died of a heart attack linked to a strong alcohol consumption and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. On the film sets of the Young and the Restless, Kristoff St. John always tried to create a positive and festive working atmosphere until his disappearance, as reported by each of his partners.

Beau Kazer (Brock Reynolds)

Brian Lowe/JPI Studios

Beau Kazer joined the soap opera The Young and the Restless in 1974 as Brock Reynolds, the son of Katherine Chancellor. He left the series in 1980 but resumed his role on an ad hoc basis between 1984 and 2013. His character was also the father of Mackenzie, a particularly popular heroine in the early 2000s. The actor died on December 30, 2014 and the exact causes of his death have never been disclosed.

Carolyn Conwell (Mary Williams)

CBS

How can we forget the very (too?) invasive mother of Paul (Doug Davidson)? Between 1980 and 2004, Carolyn Conwell lent her features to Mary Williams, the detective’s mother hen. She was asked to return to the series but her old age and illness prevented her from doing so. She breathed her last in October 2012 at the age of 82.

Quinn Redeker (Rex Sterling)

The actor brought Rex Sterling to life in The Young and the Restless. The hero was linked to an emblematic figure of the soap opera: he was indeed the husband of Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper)! But before playing this character between 1987 and 1994 (then briefly in 2004), the actor interpreted another protagonist in the series in 1979: Nick Reed, the abusive father of Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott)! Quinn Redeker died of natural causes aged 86 at the end of 2022.

Terry LesterJack Abbott

CBS Capture

In 1980, Jack landed in Genoa City. Before being played by Peter Bergman (who lent his features to the character from 1989), the role of the Abbott family playboy was played by Terry Lester. The latter left the series because he felt that Jack was left out. According to him, his partner Lauralee Bell (Cricket), the daughter of the creators of The Fires of Love, was put forward too much… This one also stood out in the skin of Mason Capwell in Santa Barbara. He died in 2003, at the age of 53, after having had two heart attacks.

Sharon FarrellFlorence Webster

Solar Productions / Duo Films / Cinema Center Films

Sharon Farrell arrived in Genoa City in 1991 as Florence Webster. This character was none other than the mother of Nina, one of the most popular characters in the series at the time. Together, the two women faced one of the great villains of the soap opera: the diabolical David Kimble (Michael Corbett)! She played in the soap opera until 1997. The actress died in May 2023 of natural causes.
