The first Russian electric car is already the laughing stock of the internet


In partnership with the Moscow Polytechnic Institute, the manufacturer Avtotor presented a 100% electric car with a horrible design. Mass production would be planned for 2025.

In France, no one will forget the Fiat Multipla, a car with an abominable design that the YouTube channel Vilebrequin took great pleasure in putting back in the spotlight. It was distinguished in particular by a strange bulge between the hood and the windshield. Could Russian designers have been inspired by this for the Avtotor Amber, revealed in an article published on December 19 by RB.ru?

We have to admit that this Amber is just as ugly, with a closed grille that looks like a slide, tiny little headlights that give it a scary look, its proportions that make no sense (is there a real aerodynamic work to help autonomy?) or its rear part reminiscent of a hearse. Next to it, the Fiat Multipla would almost be a model of beauty. “ All the real designers have left Russia. The Avtotor Amber will go down in history as the ugliest car ever made », mocks Internet user. “ The Fiat Multipla is no longer the ugliest car in the world », asserts another. Avtotor Amber or the future Russian pride on the automobile market?

Very few technical details have been provided on this car, which is still only at the prototype stage. A point which implies that aesthetic changes are to be expected (and so much the better). The project is currently only in its testing phase. The ambition is to obtain certification of five pre-production units from next year. Things could therefore quickly accelerate for this atypical vehicle. The Amber will be assembled in a factory located in Kaliningrad, from which Hyundai, BMW and even Kia vehicles come out.

Avtotor intends to make it the people’s car, promising an attractive price. Future owners will notably have the opportunity to buy or rent the battery, which could lower the acquisition cost. This strategy was employed by Renault at the start of the marketing of the Zoé, at a time when this essential component represented an immense cost. The French manufacturer ended up changing its tune.

Avtotor insists its car would be 100% made in Russia, which seems strange, if not ambitious, especially concerning certain key elements (the battery in the lead). It is difficult not to see the desire to make it a source of pride for a country weighed down by numerous international sanctions. By imagining that the Amber becomes a reliable and economically interesting car, the bet could work – especially since the objective is to develop a universal platform. In the meantime, we can always laugh at his atypical look.
