GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards can no longer be sold in China, but NVIDIA has the solution.
In a few weeks, NVIDIA should officially present the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series graphics cards in the world. A range which will however not concern the RTX 4090.
For this one, nothing new to expect for at least several months… unless you live in China. There, remember, the most powerful NVIDIA card is no longer on sale, affected by American restrictions.
Fewer CUDA cores
NVIDIA, however, found a way to adjust its offer to the demands of Gina Raimondo, the Commerce Secretary of Joe Biden’s government. Indeed, to have the right to be exported to China, a product must not exceed an index ” Total Processing Performance » by 4,800 points.
Initially, the GeForce RTX 4090 exceeds this threshold and the card was logically affected by American restrictions. It has already been more than a month since it has been impossible to find them, legally, from Chinese resellers who have fallen back on the RTX 4080… but it is not the same thing.
NVIDIA therefore pulled the GeForce RTX 4090D out of its hat. We don’t have all the technical information about it yet, but this card needs to reduce the number of CUDA cores to comply with the rules.
Power largely preserved
A reduction of which we do not know the exact amplitude and which is partly compensated by a slight increase in the basic operating frequency: we would go from 2,235 MHz to 2,280 MHz.
No change, however, in terms of the boost frequency, which suggests that the GeForce RTX 4090D would be slightly less powerful than the RTX 4090. A difference which would be observed on the heaviest calculations, but not necessarily in video games by example.
Reserved for the Chinese market only, the GeForce RTX 4090D seems likely to be marketed before the end of the year. Our colleagues from VideoCardz have heard of a launch date, December 28, at a price that would be identical to the MSRP of the RTX 4090, $1,599.
