“The generosity of the French will be put to the test”

Have the French been generous in 2022 towards associations and foundations? Early indicators suggest that the response is positive. At 333 euros, the average amount of donations made during the year (as declared by respondents) would indeed be up 21.5% compared to 2021, according to the annual barometer on French solidarity Ipsos / Apprentis d ‘Auteuil.

The average donation declared for 2022 reaches 2,372 euros per year among high incomes (households with incomes exceeding 120,000 euros per year), or 8.3% more than in 2021, according to this survey which is to be published on April 13. . The number of donors is generally stable: 50% of the general population and 78% of high earners claim to have given in 2022, compared to 48% and 80% respectively in 2021.

Key figure from this fourth edition of the barometer: the proportion of declared donors among 18-34 year olds (55%, +13 points in two years) has almost caught up with that of those aged 60 and over (56%, -11 points in two years ).

“Generosity was probably driven in the first half by the strong mobilization for Ukrainian refugees”, explains Stéphane Dauge, director of communication, benefactor relations and resources of the Apprentis d’Auteuil foundation. The increase in the average donation amount, therefore, “does not mean that non-emergency associations and foundations have received more donations”he tempers.

39% plan to give less

For the first half of 2022, France generosities, a union bringing together more than 130 general interest organizations appealing to the generosity of the public, reports a 10.7% increase in collection (compared to the first six months of 2021 ), but reduced to 1.6% if grants for Ukraine are excluded. “The complete 2022 figures will be published in mid-May, but they will have to be analyzed in the light of the high inflation of 2022., they will have to be converted into constant euros”insists Nadège Rodrigues, director of studies and communication at France generosities.

“Inflation impacts the amount of donations but also the costs of associations, and it also increases, for solidarity organizations, the needs of beneficiaries”, she recalls. The results of a survey on the impact of inflation on associations to be unveiled April 18 by The Associative Movement.

On the ground of inflation, a major concern of the sector, the barometer of Apprentis d’Auteuil will not reassure. “For the first time in four years, there are, in 2023, more respondents who say they want to give less during the year (39%) than respondents who say they want to give more (22%). It is worrying, 2023 promises to be difficult, the generosity of the French will be put to the test”warns Mr. Dauge.
