The German group Uniper will relaunch a coal-fired power plant

Aug 22 (Reuters) – Energy supplier Uniper said on Monday it would restart power generation for market at its Heyden 4 coal-fired power station as Russian gas deliveries to Europe are suspended through the pipeline. Nord Stream 1 could impact the electricity market.

The Heyden 4 power plant will start producing electricity from August 29 until April 30, 2023, Uniper said in a statement.

The “envisaged operation of Heyden 4 will be restricted due to limitations on rail transport capacity for coal to the site, which could be lifted once additional transport capacity becomes available”, added the German group.

Uniper announced in December 2020 that Heyden 4 would cease commercial production as part of its decarbonization strategy.

Since mid-2021, Heyden 4 has supported the electricity system as a reserve power plant but does not produce electricity for the market.

Gazprom announced Friday that Russia would suspend from August 31 to September 2 its deliveries of gas to Europe while a maintenance operation must be carried out.

This closure of the gas pipeline should once again disrupt supplies to Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas for its industry. (Juby Babu Bangalore report, with Ann Maria Shibu, French version Laetitia Volga)
