The GPU of the Exynos 2400 chip in the Galaxy S24 shrivels that of the Exynos 2200

A first benchmark result shows flattering results for the Exynos 2400 GPU, with a score doubled compared to the Exynos 2200. Don’t look at the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 though!

They were expected, they did not disappoint: the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra mark a historic break with the previous range. This assertion emanates from the Galaxy AI rather than the SoCs, which are logical evolutions of previous generations. Only in the case of the Exynos, the 2400 version marks the return of the chips concocted by Samsung after an aborted Exynos 2300; with considerable gains compared to the Exynos 2200.

A GPU twice as efficient?

This is what emerges from a first GPU test result shared by the Nguyen Phi Hung account on the social network X.com. The publication reveals that Samsung’s new chip performs twice as well as the old one, the Exynos 2200, in the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark.

In both cases, these are processors whose graphics part was developed in partnership with AMD. This marriage first gave rise to the Exynos 2200, a chip armed with an Xclipse 920 GPU. This mobilizes 6 RDNA 3 computing units set at 1.3 GHz.

Its successor, the Exynos 2400, features an Xclipse 940. The exact number of cores remains uncertain at the time of writing, but we know that the GPU uses AMD’s latest graphics architecture, RDNA 3, as well deployed on desktop and mobile graphics cards, the RX 7000.

In both cases, we are entitled to hardware acceleration of ray tracing, with all the limits inherent to an integrated graphics chipset.

In the 3DMark benchmark, the Samsung S24 armed with the Exynos 2400 achieves 4042 points according to the source, compared to only 1968 points for the Samsung S22 Ultra equipped with the Exynos 2200. This is therefore a difference of 105%; suffice to say that the generational leap is considerable.

Yes, but then the Snapdragon?

However, the performance must be put into perspective, for three reasons. The first is that a benchmark score alone doesn’t mean much; we must also consider other criteria, such as consumption or the capacity of smartphones to keep their host cool during several minutes of heavy use.

The second is clearly reflected in the designations. There is not one, but two generations of difference between the Exynos 2200 and the Exynos 2400. Despite everything, an increase of 105% over two generations remains commendable.

Finally, the third lesson, and perhaps the most important, is clear in the table concocted by our colleagues at VideoCardz : with 5010 points, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 maintains a comfortable lead over Samsung’s solution (with the reservation that the two chips are not within the same smartphone).

To reassure ourselves, let us point out the defeat of the Apple A17 Pro of the iPhone 15 Pro with its 3590 points.

In Europe, the S24 and S24+ will inherit an Exynos 2400. All Ultra models will be entitled to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Launch on January 30, with probably full tests on that date.
