Apple is slightly behind in the field of smartphone AI, and Apple knows it. It’s hard to miss: after a notable arrival on Google’s Pixels, generative AI made a sensational entrance at Samsung this year, with the Galaxy S24. Also, the Cupertino company has very little time to react if it does not want to miss the bandwagon with its iPhones.
It’s an understatement to say that the manufacturer is expected to attend its next WWDC conference, which will take place from June 10 to 14. Furthermore, some indiscretions have already provided an overview of the program in this area, in particular on the AI functionalities which should arrive with iOS 18. But Apple does not intend to stop there and does not hesitate to call closer to competition.
Apple could use OpenAI for its next iPhones
We already know that Apple has approached Google to possibly bring Gemini to iPhone. But that doesn’t mean the firm isn’t evaluating its other options. Thus, according to journalist Mark Gurman, similar conversations are underway with ChatGPT. The idea would be to help Apple improve its own technology, while filling the gap on the next iPhones.

In other words, Google and OpenAI are now competing to attract Apple’s favors. Furthermore, it is entirely possible that the company will ultimately decide to do without their services. After all, it is common knowledge that Apple has tried to negotiate with OpenAI in the past. As for the exact form that this integration will take, this still remains to be determined.
But Mark Gurman is already talking about a chatbot similar to ChatGPT directly included in iOS, as Google is already doing on Android with Gemini. We may have more news at the next WWDC.
