Adapted from Puyi’s 1964 autobiography, The Last Emperor tells the story of Puyi, from his ascension to the throne as a boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist Party.
Join John Lone, Peter O’Toole and Joan Chen in this epic historical biopic, which was the first Western feature film to be authorized to film in the Forbidden City in Beijing by the People’s Republic of China.
Premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 1987, The Last Emperor met with great critical and public success before winning nine Oscars, including those for best film, best director and best adapted screenplay. It also won three BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, nine David di Donatello Awards and a Grammy for its sublime musical score by, among others, Ryuichi Sakamoto who also appears in the film.
