Seven years ago, “The Last of Us” was supposed to be filmed. Now a series adaptation of the acclaimed video game is taking shape.

“The Last of Us” was released for Playstation 3 on June 14, 2013 – a milestone in video game history. However, a long-announced film adaptation was a long time coming. At the US broadcaster HBO, a series adaptation is slowly taking shape. Half a year after Bella Ramsey (17) and Pedro Pascal (46) were confirmed as the main actors, the first picture from the series can now be seen. The video game company Naughty Dog, who produced the template and is also involved in the series, shows the photo on Twitter.

The faces of the actors cannot be seen yet. Ramsey and Pascal stand with their backs to the camera in a post-apocalyptic landscape and look at the wreckage of an airplane.

A zombie mushroom strikes

Like the original, the series version of “The Last of Us” also takes place twenty years after the outbreak of an epidemic. A mutant mushroom has turned 60 percent of humanity into frenzied zombies. The hero of the story is the smuggler Joel, who escorts 14-year-old Ellie, presumably immune to the fungus, through the post-apocalyptic United States. They not only have to defend themselves against infected undead, but also against survivors.

A film adaptation of the successful video game was planned as early as 2014. Horror expert Sam Raimi (61, “Tanz der Teufel”) was supposed to direct. But the project petered out. Instead, HBO secured the rights to a series. The author and executive producer is Neil Druckmann (42), who developed the video game. From a cinematic point of view, Craig Mazin (50), creator of the highly acclaimed disaster series “Chernobyl”, is involved.

HBO cast as stars

Bella Ramsey plays the role of Ellie. In the HBO hit series “Game of Thrones” she played Lyanna Mormont, the Lady of Bear Island. Series fans also know co-star Pedro Pascal from “Game of Thrones”, he played Oberyn Martell. The American with Chilean roots is probably better known as the hero of the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian”.
