The Line: Aerial photos show current construction progress on the 170 kilometer long building

When the first reports about NEOM made the rounds, quite a few people believed it was a joke. Saudi Arabia’s current flagship projects seemed too utopian. Nine million people will one day live in the 170 kilometer long, mirrored building The Line. It is also expected to be the largest structure ever created by man. Cars should be left out and high-speed trains will be used instead.

But that’s not all: four megacities are to be built. “Sindalah” is planned as a retreat for the wealthy. In contrast to The Line, the city consists of many individual buildings. According to the plan, the first residents should move in as early as 2024.

Trojena, on the other hand, is being built in the mountains and is primarily intended to enable active leisure activities for future residents. Scientists are to settle in the city of Oxagon. Since the metropolitan region relies on renewable energies and is to be powered 100 percent by solar, wind and hydropower, there are corresponding fields of research.

Whether all of this will be successful and stay on time and within budget is often questioned. The regular updates from those responsible for the project try to convey a picture of constant progress. Of The Line, probably the most spectacular NEOM city, there is not much more to see than long trenches in the desert. The other cities seem to have made further progress. We have summarized the current aerial photos for you in the gallery above.

The idea for the project goes back to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who could create a monument for himself with the gigantic building The Line. However, there are also many critical voices about the project, which, among other things, criticize the possible resettlement of the Huwaitat tribe, who have settled in this area for centuries.
